Part 1
Yes, it wasn't hard to get your back, OR anything else, wet this weekend. We met up on Fingerboard Mtn., at the shelter. It had been exquisite, weather-wise, all week.

But, things were gonna get ugly, which can turn even the nicest group of hikers into......[short drum roll](moment of silence)...a bunch of WETBACKS!

Why some of the girls chose the 'bareback' thing as part of the thread title is now a mystery of all of us, due to a collective collapse of memory.

Which brings me to Friday night...Newbie (and all-around nice guy) NYCNick and Twinks came over by boat th Staten Island and I picked them up at the ferry. We then went to pick up Officer Deputy Dawg at the job, but not until after a worthwhile stop at the local liquor store.

Mark-O had secured the shelter on (Bareback?) Mountain and I suspect that a few others may have joined them. We got up there around 10:30 or 11 PM. It wasn't a hard hike in. Just enough to be refreshing after a long days' work.

Once at the shelter, we reunited with Mark-O and Conk, and had the pleasure of meeting JZip, a blast to party with.

Part 2
goddamn mother#&%!$ing #&%!$.,,,... Can't get any sleep around here!!

This was the grumblings of one, Jzip! Yes, when we got there, he had already taken the futile step of going to sleep, somehow under the disillusion that he would stay that way.

After greetings, a little unpacking and a few tent set-ups, we kicked right into the party. Seemed to be what everyone wanted. So, we broke out many incarnations of drink.......and proceeded to move rapidly in emptying some of the contents of each other's holdings. Alright, let's not pull any punches....Ever see a bunch of sailors go out drinking after they've been holed up for several weeks? Seriously, we just had a good time letting loose and dropping some stress, which is one of the beauty parts of doing these trips.

We cut it off somewhere between 3 and 4. Maple and I had to get up and meet two female friends of hers from the animal kingdom.

Well, let me interject by saying that we were fully aware that the weather service was predicting high volumes of rain, high winds, and possible thunderstorms. But, there is always that twinge of doubt in your mind that the weatherguy (or girl) is always going to be right! So, sometimes, you just jump in, go anyway, and hope for a break.

Well, the rain began right around the time I went to sleep. I was able to compartmentalize that thought and go to sleep, only to be awakened by the loud patter of fairly heavy raindrops.

I knew instantly that the 40% chance of rain predicted for this hour had, in one fell swoop, upped itself to 100%.

So, we got up and took the walk down to the trailhead. My pants weren't exactly adequate for what was to come. It was coming down at a good clip.

When we got to the car, we met Maple's friends and we decided that we weren't going to hang too much longer.

Part 3 to wrap it up...stick around

Part 3
When we got back to the shelter, Backslacker, Lost Soul and Phantom Soul were up with the rest of the group. We had heard an updated forecast. The winds were supposed to kick up to 35 mph with heavy rain and possible t-storms. We had no wood left and the storm in the morning left a lot of water.

The rest of the group hung around while we bailed. Mark-O, Twinks, Maple and I went to the radio station to do the Underground Railroad at three. Maple's friends went back to the city.

Unfortunately, Maple did a number on her knee and she is icing it down. Swollen and bruised. This put the icing on the cake for us bailing.

Had a great, but abbreviated trip. Sorry tonight didn't pan out. But, this storm is huge. We drove through a lot of rain tonight. I don't know if anyone stayed for the night from the rest of the group. We will be waiting to hear from them. Let's do it again soon, friends!

We have only a few pics. Memory card seemed to have gotten corrupted.

I saw lots of rain on the radar on TV and was wondering how you were making out in the bad weather. It sure was wet out there and raw out too.

Great to see you guys again, we ended up only staying for a few hours, there was a lull in the storm, and decided this was the best time to make are way back to the trailhead. Not to mention the fact that 15 japanese hikers invaded the shelter, stunk the whole place out with cabbage and sang songs in their native tongues. What a sight, they had the biggest stoves I ever seen carried on their backs, and since we only had about 2 square feet of room left in the shelter and the smell was driving me insane, we decided it was a good time to bail. Great to see Tree, Maple and Marko again, and meet Jzip, Conk and NYCNick. Phantom and Lost Souls always a pleasure. Hope to hike with all of you again soon.

Cabbage, huh?
Are you sure they are not Korean?

It was great to see all you guys and gals again.
Too bad the weather forecast came true.

BackSlacker, did you guys hike out the blue trail the way we did?

If so, did anyone find a dark blue zipper ditty bag?
It is Outdoor Products and 8 X 5 X 2 and contains matches, compass, pocket knife, can opener, my favorite spoon, ect.
My spare Scion key may also be in it.

If I did indeed lose this item it must have been when I was loading my stuff into my car down where the blue-blaze trail meets the road.

When I arrived 5:00 PM at Fingerboard Mountain Shelter a mob of wild turkeys took of runnin' and flyin'.

The first thing I did was set up my Kiva tent and lay claim to the shelter.

jzip showed up about 6:00 and we went about gettin' wood......wise cracks, please!

About 7:00 I headed back to my car with empty pack to get my beer and sleeping bag.
I had trucked in two tents and a tarp on the first trip.

When I got back it was almost dark and we got the fire going.
It took until 4:00 AM to burn up all that wood!

A good time was had by all and Scorch bailed, again!

The Trip That (Almost) Wasn't...
BackSlacker, Lost Soul, and I met at the Elk Pen trailhead, from which we were originally supposed to hike into Fingerboard Shelter via the AT and the Lemon Squeezer. But with the pouring rain, we decided to take the Shortcut and drove over to Tioratti Beach for the short 3/4 mile hike in.

We left the cars in the pouring rain and howling wind, and the weather continued to batter us all all the way in.

We put up some tarps at the shelter where it was nice to see Conk and Twinkle Toes again. We set up tarps to keep out the cold wind, and soon we were introduced to jzip and nycNick. Both were cool guys and I'd love to meet up with them again and do a "real" trip...

Anyway, soon Mapleleaf and Treebeard came back with MarkO, and all have decided they were going home. Starting to feel a little chilly, and already wearing all the clothes I had, I realized this trip was in the fast lane to Lameville, and started considering getting out myself...

Only problem is that I hitched a ride with Backslacker, who originally wanted to stay. I started negotiating rides home with Treebeard and MarkO when Backslacker reluctantly decided to go back home too, but later on.

So we hung out at Fingerboard shelter for a while after Treebeard et al, and MarkO left. Soon a tourbus full of Japanese hikers showed up and literally took over the shelter, completely squeezing us out.

So that kinda sealed the coffin shut on the trip, as we headed back out into a lull in the rain, hoping that we'd get back to the car without once again getting soaked.

BackSlacker, Lost Soul, and I managed to do so in the end, but the mood was very somber as opposed to celebratory. We said our goodbyes, and swore we'd be back for a re-match with mother nature (and the that tourbus). No restaurants or anything on the way back, just went back home to lick our wounds.

Our asses have been kicked, both by mother nature and a busload of Japanese hikers. :(

Hey fatbear, maybe "wetback" is discriminatory where you come from, but lay off. It was raining and there was no suggestion of whatever a wetback may or may not be. Are Japanese wetbacks? If so, who gives a rip; we're all hikers here. I'm a southern cracker and you can rip on me all day if it makes you feel better.

0 correct: You need to work on your skills. Try being more arrogant in general and while you're at it, the next time you see a little old lady in need of help going across the street, push her into a puddle...

1 correct: You're getting there. Stop opening doors for people and eliminate 'have a nice day' from your vocabulary...

2 correct: You are indeed a student to be taken seriously. A little tweaking may be necessary. Try spitting off low building as a crowd passes under you and then duck out of sight...

Knowing that Treebeard didn't mean the term in a derogatory way I don't take offense. But Stovestomper brings up a very valid point. People who pop in to TT for the first (and maybe last) time don't know that and it reflects on Matt's site.

Sass, Stovie did that for one reason only, to take a blast at me. Let the little man have his cheap shots. But, don't give him that much credit.

If you think taking this that far out of context is justice, then ask Matt to have the thread deleted. Meantime, have a blast piling on, Stovestomper. You're always short on substance, but good for this kind of bullsh_t...
