gear under $100View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 21 of 21 messages posted.
quality gear under $100 “Im about 6'4 250lb. Im mainly looking for a good lightweight tent, sleeping bag, and backpack(good for about a 2-4 day hike).hopefully under about $80-$100each. Any recommendations?? Any other cheap gear recommendations are also welcome. :)” 11:16:38 PM 1/22/12 “Wait for stuff to go on sale. Decide what you want at a reputable gear store and check the internet for the best prices. I'd recommend a tent but you are too tall, and you need to find a backpack that fits.” 11:24:44 PM 1/22/12 “Anyone done or researched gear for the $300 challenge? Sleeping bag, Tent, and was it Stove all for under 300, or was it each for 300? I know I wouldn't trust a sleeping bag much under $300. I could find a tent for about $100, and stoves are easy.” 3:43:27 PM 1/23/12 “Check out the Big Agnes and Campmor sleeping bags. I think they make some in your size. Make sure the shoulder girth is sufficient. Try on some standard bags and you will see what I mean.” 3:55:30 PM 1/23/12 “I have a sleepcell sleeping bag i think i can use that has treated me pretty well on my rafting and camping trips. i have had my eye on the big agnes seedhouse. If i keep looking i think i can get it for about $80-$100 used. still not sure on what backpack i want to go after, or even what size to go for.” 7:35:43 PM 1/23/12 “Is there a resale gear place near you? You have to be a little careful, but a lot of people buy expensive gear. Then they go once and decide they don't like it.” 9:44:12 PM 1/23/12 “We have a local sporting goods store and a Lewis and Clark also that both have killer sales this time of year because they get in next years gear and want to get rid of last years models. I scored a nice Eureka Mountain Pass 1XT( solo tent) for $100 this way. Not sure if you would fit in it but you get the idea on the shopping strategy. Even if I'm not really in the market for anything specific, I always make the rounds this time of year. I'd even search EBay and Craigslist list.” 4:38:38 AM 1/24/12 “The only backpack I've been really happy with I tried on loaded at a decent gear store. I keep reminding myself of that because I'm looking for a new one now and finding deals on the internet (Check out GoLite's web page). I bought two nice 20 degree down bags when they were on sale for around $150. You can find decent synthetics for less than $100 but they are heavier and take up more room in your pack. You can always sleep under a tarp while you are searching for a killer tent deal.” 5:13:18 AM 1/24/12 “just bought a hi-tec v-lite 2 tent on sale for $35. its really hard to find anything on these online. i was able to find 2 video reviews on youtube about them. you can replace the pole with stick, or your walking pole. Or you can just string it to a branch. and get rid of the heavy duty pack sack to drop it down to about 2lb 6oz. now what i really like about this tent is even at that weight you still have a 7'3"x5' sleeping area and a 3"x3" vestibule for all your gear. i will be treating and sealing this tent, like i do to every tent i buy. i hope it treats me well on the trail till i can get something better. ill let you guys know how it performs.” 1:48:34 AM 1/25/12 “The place needs more gear reviews.” 12:15:43 PM 1/25/12 “Bummer, is all I can say. I couldn't resist buying one of those, even though I didn't need it - it was just so cheap & light! After pitching it in my front yard I knew I'd prolly never take it camping. It requires 10 stakes and it's tough to get taut. Later I went camping with another guy who had one - it rained and he got soaked. Remember what I said about a tarp.” 12:58:49 PM 1/25/12 “There is another HiTec tent that looks like it's designed better, but that particular one isn't good.” 1:00:32 PM 1/25/12 “after i watched the review i knew i probably better bring something for a rain fly. but i figure this will do till i save up some cash for some better gear.they had the other tent style there but the roof is low and looked like a pain to get into the small front door.also it had no vestibule and lacked floor space for a big guy like me.every tent i buy i treat and seal everything. so i hope that helps.” 5:10:19 PM 1/25/12 “i will put up a review on this tent once it warms up so i can seal it up and test it out.” 5:20:25 PM 1/25/12 “Make sure the girth is sufficient. Creek Dancer 4:55:30 PM 1/23/12 out of context edited quotes. I like this new game.” 5:23:25 PM 1/25/12 “LOL @ Opie. Well...girth is important, but so is length. It's important that things fit just right. Otherwise, your whole night is shot and you don't sleep well :)” 5:41:05 AM 1/26/12 “uhhhh *blushes* ohhhh sleeping bags!!” 3:25:22 PM 1/26/12 “ last edited: 1/27/12 4:44:23 PM” 4:42:02 PM 1/27/12 “I still dont know if she is talking about sleeping bags.” 4:45:23 PM 1/27/12 “LOL! Actually...I am talking about sleeping bags.” 5:29:50 PM 1/27/12 “yeah - right” 5:48:11 PM 1/27/12
